Joe Biden swore the oath of office yesterday to become the 46th president of the United States.
He took the oath from Supreme Court Justice John Roberts with his hand on a family Bible that dates back to 1893. It has been present at his prior swearing-ins as senator and vice president, and son Beau Biden used it when he became Delaware attorney general.
At age 78, he is the oldest president ever inaugurated.
Kamala Harris was sworn is as well. The 56-year-old is the first female vice president, and also the first Black woman and person of South Asian descent to hold the role.
She was sworn in by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor using two Bibles: one that belonged to Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, the late civil rights icon, and the other to Regina Shelton, a longtime family friend who helped raise Harris during her childhood.
